Hearing Loss is about Understanding

Thank you for supporting my work!

I know you could just “take” it from the internet, so I really appreciate you valuing my words!

My 12-year-old daughter was invited by her audiologist to speak to a college class who was studying hearing loss. When asked what the most difficult part of hearing with a cochlear implant was, she responded with this quote. “It’s not about hearing. It’s about understanding.” I think it is one of the most profound things she has ever articulated. When people think of hearing loss, they often associate with not being able to hear. But with the use of hearing technology and devices, it is much more than simply hearing. Processing and understanding are the challenging parts. The brain must make sense of the information entering. Factor in a hearing deficit and the brain is working much harder than a hearing person.
